The 35-year-old, who captains Poland’s national football team and plays for Spanish club Barcelona, picked up the injury during Barcelona's 1-0 win over Porto in the Champions League on Wednesday night, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Lewandowski was substituted in the 34th minute of the match and later diagnosed with a sprained ankle.

Poland’s national team doctor, Jacek Jaroszewski, said on Thursday that the injury "turned out to be so serious that it rules out Robert’s participation in national team training and his appearances in the matches against the Faroe Islands and Moldova, as well as in the next Barcelona matches.”

Poland last month lost 0-2 to Albania in their fifth Euro 2024 qualifier in Tirana, leaving fans jittery about the national football team's chances of qualifying for the European tournament next year.

The Polish team, coached by Michał Probierz, takes on the Faroe Islands away in their next Euro 2024 qualifier on October 12. Three days later the Poles will play Moldova at the National Stadium in Warsaw.

After five rounds of fixtures, Poland are fourth in their qualifying Group E, with six points, ahead of only the Faroe Islands.
