Tennis: Poland's Hurkacz, Fręch through to Round 2 at Australian Open

Poland's Hubert Hurkacz and Magdalena Fręch have advanced to the second round of the 2024 Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne.

The two Polish players made it through to Round 2 of the first Grand Slam tournament of 2024, on the hard courts of Melbourne, on Monday.

Hurkacz, the world no. 9 in men's tennis, beat Australia's 341-ranked Omar Jasika 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, 6-2.

He will now face Jiri Mensik of the Czech Republic (world no. 144) in Round 2. 

Earlier in the day, Poland's 69-ranked Magdalena Fręch defeated home player Daria Saville (world no. 152) 6-7, 6-3, 7-5, in Round 1 of the women's tournament. 

Poland's world no. 1 Iga Świątek enters the competition on Tuesday, facing America's Sofia Kenin in the opening round. 

The 2024 Australian Open tournament runs until January 28.
