Polish Radio 1 ("Jedynka") has been broadcasting the stories of Polish sporting heroes, on the occasion of the centenary of Poland's first participation in the Olympic Games, in 1924. (Polish speakers can find a list of stories thus far celebrated here.)
Egon Franke (1935 – 2022) was a Polish fencer. He won gold in the individual foil at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, as well a team silver medal.
Franke was born in Gliwice in Silesia and was the first Polish gold-medal winner in fencing:
