Speaking at a news conference in Hanover on Wednesday, Poland boss Michał Probierz said that Lewandowski "will definitely not play against the Dutch on Sunday," but "it is possible that he will play against Austria on June 21."
The 35-year-old picked up the injury during Poland’s friendly match against Turkey in Warsaw on Sunday, broadcaster TVP Info reported.
Lewandowski tallied an assist in the team's 2-1 victory over the Turkish side on Sunday night, but was substituted after 30 minutes of play.
Clinical and imaging studies later showed that the Polish marksman "suffered a torn biceps femoris muscle, which rules him out of the first match of the tournament in Germany," according to Poland's team doctor Jacek Jaroszewski.
"We are doing everything so that Robert can play in the second match against Austria," Jaroszewski said.
The Euro 2024 tournament opens in Germany on Friday with a match between the host nation and Scotland at Munich Football Arena.
The Poles start their group-stage campaign against the Netherlands in Hamburg on Sunday, June 16.
Probierz's men will next take on Austria in Berlin on June 21 and then play France in Dortmund on June 25.
