Świątek defeated Russia's Daria Kasatkina on Thursday at the eight-player event, but was eliminated after Czech player Barbora Krejčiková defeated American Coco Gauff in a later match.

The Polish world No. 2 and defending WTA Finals champion began her campaign with a hard-fought 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory over Krejčiková, followed by a 3-6, 4-6 loss to Gauff in her second match.

On Thursday, she dominated Kasatkina 6-1, 6-0, showing renewed confidence in her game after a two-month competitive break during which she parted ways with her Polish coach Tomasz Wiktorowski and brought on Belgium's Wim Fissette as his replacement.

Last month, Świątek lost her world No. 1 spot to Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka after spending 125 weeks at the top of the rankings.
