Netflix, the world’s biggest internet video-on-demand provider, in May 2017 announced plans to produce a series it said was based on the “globally popular fantasy saga from Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski, that has entranced legions of fans worldwide.”

The world premiere of the first season of Netflix’s The Witcher, which comprises eight episodes, took place on Monday evening at London’s Leicester Square.

The series stars British actor Henry Cavill, known for his roles in The Tudors TV series and the Mission: Impossible – Fallout action film.

Cavill told public broadcaster Polish Radio that the series is not only about fantastic creatures, knights and wizards, but rather “a kind of a mirror for the modern viewer.”

Last week, Netflix published a short video of Sapkowski being interviewed by the producer of the new series, Lauren S. Hissrich.

The series was shot mainly in Poland, Spain and Hungary, Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

A computer game based on The Witcher by Polish game developer CD Projekt RED has proved a worldwide hit.

Sapkowski’s books have topped bestseller lists in Poland for years and have been translated into 20 languages. He is the second most translated Polish author, after sci-fi writer Stanisław Lem.
