The archaeological dig in the village of Przykopka, near the town of Ełk in Poland's northeastern Warmińsko-Mazurskie province, was carried out in connection with the planned construction of the country's S61 expressway, a spokesman for the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways told state news agency PAP.
Along with the necklace, archeologists unearthed other jewellery items such as pins, buttons, cufflinks, rings and head ornaments with bronze appliqués as well as elements of clothing, the spokesman, Karol Głębocki, said.
Other finds included coins from the 18th and 19th centuries, numerous fragments of ceramic vessels and other objects of everyday use as well as animal bones.
Human skeletons and bone fragments were also discovered at the site of a 18th-19th century cemetery near the planned Ełk Południe-Wysokie S61 expressway junction, according to Głębocki.
"Conservation work is currently being carried out on the historical objects, while the human remains have been submitted for anthropological analysis," Głębocki said, as cited by the PAP news agency.
