The work of Ary Scheffer, a Dutch-French artist of the first half of the 19th century, the portrait is on loan from a museum in Dordrecht in the Netherlands, the painter’s birthplace.
Chopin visited Scheffer’s studio in 1847, two years before his death. The portrait is characterized by simplicity, harmony and charm. The composer is immortalized as a melancholic man with sad eyes looking directly at the viewer.
Scheffer made many portraits of famous and influential people of his time. The one of Chopin became the most iconic image of the Polish composer.
It remains on view in Warsaw until January 30.
