Penn on Wednesday visited Poland’s historic southern city of Kraków, where his charity CORE aims to provide support for people arriving from war-torn Ukraine, Poland's PAP news agency reported.

The 61-year-old film star signed an agreement to this effect with Kraków Mayor Jacek Majchrowski.

At a news conference with Majchrowski in Kraków City Hall, Penn expressed his admiration for the Polish people, thanking them for their “empathy and hospitality” towards refugees from Ukraine, according to media outlets.

Earlier, Penn visited a welcome centre for those fleeing the Russian invasion at Kraków’s main train station.

The two-time Oscar winner’s Community Organised Relief Effort (CORE) charity is set to open a centre in Kraków to provide support for refugee care.

Local staff will be employed and they will be given full training in how to help people in need as Ukrainians and others flee for their lives from the Russian troops, reporters were told.

CORE will also fund the renovation of buildings designated to house up to 50 war refugees in Kraków, according to PAP.

Thursday is day 29 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Poland on Wednesday reported it had welcomed nearly 2.18 million refugees escaping Russia's attack on Ukraine.
