Świerkocki will collect the award during a ceremony at the Irish Ambassador's residence in Warsaw on June 15, the state-run Polish Book Institute has announced.
The prize takes its name from Bernard O'Connor, a physician at the court of 17th-century Polish monarch, King John III Sobieski.
O’Connor also wrote the first English-language account of the history of Poland.
The awardee
A prominent translator of English-language literature, Maciej Świerkocki is a graduate of the University of Łódź, central Poland, with degrees in English Philology and Philosophy. He received his PhD in 1995.
In addition to his work as a lecturer, he has published extensively in Polish and foreign journals and has several film scripts and novels to his name.
Świerkocki is the first Pole to serve on the jury of the prestigious Dublin IMPAC International Literary Award. He is also a member of the Polish Writers' Association and the Polish Film Academy, as well as an honorary member of the Polish Literary Translators Association.
He has received several awards for his achievements in the field of culture, notably literary translations.
