The event's programme includes more than a dozen productions of Shakespeare plays by theatre companies from Poland, Italy, Denmark, Norway, the Czech Republic and the United States.
The festival, which runs until August 6, features workshops, critics’ debates, concerts, exhibitions, stand-up comedy, meetings with artists and open rehearsals.
A debate on "theatre in times of war" is due to be attended by Ukrainian theatre directors such as Tamara Trunova, Tetiana Shelepko, Andrii Palatnyi and Rostyslav Derzhypilsky.
They are expected to share their experiences from the war in Ukraine and "discuss the changes that have taken place in European theatre as a result of the threat of war and crisis."
The International Shakespeare Festival was founded by Jerzy Limon, an outstanding Polish scholar, writer and translator who died of COVID-19 in March last year.
