Warsaw's Chopin Competition on Period Instruments enters second round

Fifteen pianists, including three Poles, have qualified for the second round of the 2nd International Chopin Competition on Period Instruments in Warsaw.

The three Polish pianists who will perform in the second round are Joanna Goranko, Piotr Pawlak and Kamila Sacharzewska.

The 12 other successful contestants are Derek Wang and Angie Zhang from the United States, Alice Baccalini and Ludovica Vincenti from Italy, Eric Guo from Canada, Saya Kamada from Japan, Hyunji Kim from South Korea, Mariia Kurtynina from Russia, Martin Nöbauer from Austria, Yonghuan Zhong from China, Jannik Truong from Germany, and Nicolas Margarit, who represents Australia and Spain.

A total of 35 pianists from 14 countries performed in the first round.

The event’s six finalists will be chosen after two days of auditions on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The participants have at their disposal 21 pianos from Poland's National Chopin Institute as well as copies of historical pianos and period instruments from other European collections.

The competition's international jury, chaired by Polish pianist Wojciech Świtała, brings together prominent Polish and foreign pianists, including Paolo Giacometti, Yves Henry, Tobias Koch, Vaclav Luks, Janusz Olejniczak, Olga Paschenko, Ewa Pobłocka, and Andreas Staier.

A prizewinners’ concert is scheduled for October 15.

The International Chopin Competition on Period Instruments was launched in 2018. Its first edition was won by Poland’s Tomasz Ritter.

The event is organized by the Warsaw-based National Chopin Institute.
