The "New Expression" exhibition showcases works by artists from the independent art scene in Poland during the 1980s. The exhibition features both well-known classics of this movement, as well as lesser-known paintings and installations that have not been widely seen by the public, the PAP news agency reported.
"Some of the displayed works were pulled out of attics and are now being presented for the first time in 40 years," said Krzysztof Stanisławski, director of the Center for Contemporary Art in Toruń.
"This exhibition is the result of 40 years of my work and my co-workers. We show almost 400 objects by 37 different artists of that time. Throughout the 1980s, they had to fight for freedom, and one of their ways of opposing the system was to create anti-communist art. There has never been such an exhibition before," said Stanisławski.
The Center for Contemporary Art in Toruń is currently the largest exhibition space presenting contemporary art in the country, with over 4,000 square meters of space.
The exhibition will be open until May 5.
