The annual music festival in Bayreuth, southern Germany, celebrates 19th-century German composer Richard Wagner. It attracts thousands of opera fans to the Bavarian town every summer.

The Polish singer is billed to perform as Wotan in Richard Wagner’s Die Walküre opera on Monday night.

There is one more performance of the opera, on August 21.

Konieczny also appears as Wotan in Das Rheingold and sings the part of Wotan disguised as Wanderer in Siegfried at this year’s Bayreuth Festival.

Two years ago, Konieczny said in an interview that to sing Wotan at Bayreuth was a dream come true for him.

Konieczny, 52, holds degrees in music performance and acting.

After a short stint in theatre and film, he focused on developing his vocal career, making his operatic debut as Figaro in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro in the western Polish city of Poznań in 1997.

He has since performed in some of the world’s most prestigious opera houses, specializing in German-language repertoire.

He also serves as artistic director of the Baltic Opera Festival, whose main venue is the Forest Opera in the Polish Baltic city of Sopot.

The second annual Baltic Opera Festival ended last week.
