Directed by Błażej Jankowiak in his feature debut, the movie stars Eryk Lubos as a former special forces officer who returns to his hometown and becomes entangled in a violent gang war.
The filmmakers promise intense action reminiscent of the John Wick series, emphasizing the film's realism.
Diabeł aims to provide audiences with a gripping portrayal of a man caught between his past and the violent present of his hometown.
Filming took place in early 2023 in Tarnowskie Góry, a town in southern Poland known for its historic silver mines. The film crew spent nine days shooting scenes in the city, and the production also involved locations in nearby areas such as Kamieniec and Zbrosławice.
Diabeł was created in close collaboration with veterans from GROM, Poland's elite special forces unit comparable to the U.S. Navy SEALs.
Lubos immersed himself in the military environment for nearly two years to authentically portray his character, Max—a soldier struggling to find purpose after leaving the army.
"For a quarter of a century, the army was Max's only family," reads the official plot description. "When he left its ranks, he lost the meaning of life. Supported by a former commander and a loyal veteran dog, he must choose a side in a gang war where the stakes are not only his life but also a love that could save him."
Screenwriter Robert Ziębiński based the story on his own novel, drawing from over two years of conversations with soldiers about life after military service.
"When it turned out that the archetype of a loner living in the wilderness has roots in reality — many soldiers actually choose to live away from civilization after service — the story began to write itself," Ziębiński said in a press release.
A trailer for Diabeł has been released online, offering a first glimpse of the high-octane action and dramatic storyline.
The film's release has been eagerly anticipated, with initial plans for a 2023 premiere postponed multiple times before settling on the November 2024 date.
