The film is set in post-World War I Copenhagen. Its protagonist Karoline is a young factory worker. When she finds herself unemployed, abandoned and pregnant, she meets Dagmar, a charismatic woman running an underground adoption agency that helps mothers find foster homes for their unwanted children.
Press material for the film describes it as "a fairytale about a horrible truth” and a story “about a woman struggling to find love and a sense of morality.”
The Girl with the Needle was directed by Magnus von Horn, 41, a Swedish-Polish director and scriptwriter who studied in Poland and subsequently made it his home.

On Saturday, Dobesz collected the Excellence Award in the Best European Production Design category at the European Film Awards in Lucerne for her work on The Girl with the Needle.
