Returning to Eurovision after 30 years, Steczkowska won Poland’s national selection late on Friday with the song “Gaja”.

Her performance received nearly 40 percent of the votes — almost twice as much as the runner-up, who received just under 24 percent.

Which of the 11 finalists was to become the country’s entry in this year's Eurovision final in Basel, Switzerland was decided solely by viewers' votes.

From the outset, Steczkowska appeared the clear favorite, not least because she was the only true star in the lineup, the only finalist widely recognized by the general public.

Ahead of Friday’s final, it also seemed almost certain that Poles would choose one of three songs steeped in mystical Slavic themes, given the level of interest surrounding the contestants.

“Gaja” is a dramatic fusion of Slavic sounds and dance-pop electronica, infused with symphonic grandeur and enriched by elements of Arabic dabke music.

Steczkowska represented Poland in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1995 with "Sama", finishing in 18th place.
