The movie, entitled Corpus Christi and inspired by real-life events, tells the story of a young man who pretends to be a priest after experiencing a spiritual transformation in a juvenile detention centre.

"The audience's reaction was extremely lively and looked genuinely positive,” Komasa told Poland’s PAP news agency.

He added that the show attracted many people and that “viewers reacted with laughter and emotion.”

The film, which features Polish actor Bartosz Bielenia in the main role, was highly rated by Italian critics after it was screened as part of the festival’s Giornate degli Autori, or Venice Days, section on Tuesday, the PAP news agency reported.

Corpus Christi will this month be vying for top honours at the 44th Polish Film Festival in the Baltic city of Gdynia.
