The events will mark 100 years since Lem was born. He was one of Poland’s most famous authors, whose works have been translated into 49 languages.
Concerts, competitions and other attractions will be held both in Poland and abroad to mark the anniversary under the slogan “Lem2021. I’ve seen the future.”
One of the organizers is Poland’s Adam Mickiewicz Institute, whose director, Barbara Schabowska, said: "Lem was a visionary, someone who foresaw the future. He combined reflection on technology with deep contemplation on the essence of humanity.”
Lem died in 2006 at the age of 85. His books dealt with the future of planet Earth and the human species.
His work, which also included short stories and philosophical essays, has inspired a number of films. Solaris, a 2002 movie featuring George Clooney, was based on Lem's 1961 book of the same title.
His other acclaimed books include Return from the Stars, Tales of Pirx the Pilot, The Cyberiad and The Chain of Chance.
