The National Centre for Film Culture in Łódź, the central Polish city where Kieślowski studied at its famed Film School, has mounted a multimedia exhibition featuring documents, photographs and personal memorabilia related to the director’s life and artistic career.

A series of events under the motto Hommage à Kieślowski, has opened in the picturesque locality of Sokołowsko, near Wałbrzych, southwestern Poland.

It runs until the end of August and comprises film screenings, meetings with filmmakers, workshops and an international conference focusing on Kieślowski’s output.

Sokołowsko is where the director spent his teens. His parents moved there in 1951 because his father was being treated for tuberculosis in a local sanitarium.

The Warsaw-based National Audiovisual Institute has honoured Kieślowski with a selection of his documentaries and feature films as well as panel discussions with the participation of prominent directors Krzysztof Zanussi and Feliks Falk.

Kieślowski, who was born 80 years ago, on June 27, 1941, achieved international critical and popular success for films such as Camera Buff, Blind Chance, The Decalogue series, The Double Life of Veronique and The Three Colours trilogy.

He won numerous awards at major international film festivals including Cannes, Berlin and Venice, as well as an Academy Award nomination for best director for Three Colours: Red.

He died in 1996 at the age of 54.
