Piotr Gliński announced the news during a visit to the Swiss town on Friday, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Gliński, who is also a deputy prime minister, noted that two years ago the museum celebrated its 150th anniversary.

“It’s one of the oldest Polish institutions in Europe,'' he said.

Change of location

Until now, the Polish Museum was based at Rapperswil Castle. However, local authorities refused to extend the lease on the castle, which expired on June 30, according to officials.

Polish leaders, including President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, had explored various options for saving the Polish Museum, reporters were told.

Last year, the government decided to buy the so-called Schwanen complex as a new headquarters for the famous institution. The complex is located 150 metres from Rapperswil Castle.

“The Polish Museum will find its second home here,” Gliński announced on Friday.

The museum collects valuable Polish documents, memorabilia and artworks located outside Poland. It also showcases Polish history, including its own collections and archives, bringing them to museum goers and researchers.

Now the Polish Museum is set to continue its role after moving to the Schwanen complex. The museum will share its new premises with the Swiss offices of the Pilecki Institute, officials said.

The Pilecki Institute is a Polish state-run research body dedicated to the study of totalitarianism and the history of Poland in the 20th century, the IAR news agency reported.
