The band’s leader, Andriy ‘Grafit’ Khlyvnyuk, told a press conference in Warsaw’s Ukrainian House that all proceeds from ticket sales are to go to the Ukrainian armed forces.
The concert at the Progresja club starts at 6 pm.
After the 2014 Russian annexation of the Crimea, BoomBox stopped performing in Russia. Following the invasion of Ukraine six months ago, the band cancelled its planned tour of the United States and its members joined their country’s Territorial Defense Forces.
Khlyvnyuk was wounded in the fighting near Kyiv at the end of March.
The band made headlines in April after rock legends Pink Floyd, led by David Gilmour, wrote and recorded the single Hey, Hey, Rise Up!, in support of Ukraine. The song included Khlyvnyuk's recorded vocals.
Today’s Warsaw gig is BoomBox’s first in a series of concerts to raise money for the Ukrainian army.
From Warsaw, the Ukrainian pop-rockers travel to Prague and Vienna. They are to perform in several Polish cities, including Poznań, Gdańsk, Wrocław and Kraków, in October.
Friday is day 184 of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
