The films, which are set to compete for the festival’s top Golden Lions award and a host of other prizes, include 15 national premieres, among them six directorial debuts, Radosław Śmigulski, head of the Polish Film Institute (PISF), told reporters on Wednesday.

Veteran director Jerzy Skolimowski's EO, Poland’s contender for next year’s Academy Awards in the best foreign film category, is among the movies selected for the festival.

Other standout productions include director Xawery Żuławski’s Apokawixa, Poland’s first zombie film, which is set to hit cinemas in October.

Also competing for the Golden Lions will be Krzysztof Łukaszewicz's Orlęta. Grodno‘39 and Wojciech Smarzowski's Wesele, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

The annual Polish Film Festival, first held in 1974, is one of the oldest film events in Europe, according to organisers.

The 47th Polish Film Festival will be held in Gdynia from September 12 to 17.

Fears, a drama co-directed by Łukasz Ronduda and Łukasz Gutt, won the Golden Lions award at the 46th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia last year.
