Three years later, most of these children made a safe return to Poland.

To commemorate the centenary of these events, in August a group of Japanese students planted 100 apple trees in Warsaw.

On Thursday, to finalise the celebrations, an apple tree symbolising Polish-Japanese friendship was planted in the garden of the Polish embassy in Tokyo.

Radio Poland's Marcin Matuszewski has the story.
