The film, which reimagines the classic Romeo and Juliet story set in modern-day Wrocław and focusing on Generation Z, is set to hit theaters across Poland this Friday.
Wrooklyn Zoo follows the story of Kosa, Wrocław’s top skateboarder, and Zora, a singer from a traditional Roma family. Their love story unfolds against the backdrop of the city, with Wrocław itself playing a central role. The film captures not only the well-known tourist spots but also lesser-seen parts of the city, including the Transformator club, areas near Wrocław Stadium, and even the Contemporary Theatre and the bridges over the Oder River.
The film features newcomer actors Mateusz Okua and Natalia Szmidt, both making their big-screen debuts, alongside established Polish stars such as Jan Frycz, Renata Dancewicz, and Konrad Eleryk. Additionally, the film includes appearances by Roma music icons Don Vasyl and Dziani, as well as Wrocław rapper Zdechły Osa. Special guest Tony Trujillo, a legendary U.S. skateboarder, also makes an appearance, along with Mateusz Zielonka, founder of Wrocław's skateboarding group, which inspired the film's title.
At the Wrocław premiere, director Skonieczny reflected on his personal connection to the venue, recalling how he once watched With Fire and Sword (based on the 1884 historical fiction novel by Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz) with his school class in the same cinema hall. "It’s a different era, with Wrooklyn Zoo as its version of With Fire and Sword—except Skrzetuski’s mustache has been replaced by a skateboard," Skonieczny joked, clearly proud of his hometown roots.
The nationwide release of Wrooklyn Zoo is set for October 18.
