In the project "Manifesto" by German artist Julian Rosefeldt, Blanchett delivers a masterful performance as she embodies a diverse range of individuals - from a punk singer to a housewife, a scientist, and a homeless man - reciting excerpts from some of the most significant manifestos of the past century written by various writers, philosophers, artists, dancers, directors, and architects.
The exhibition aims to juxtapose the radical ideas of the 20th century with the realities of contemporary life. Among the texts delivered by Blanchett are words from figures such as Karl Marx, Kazimir Malevich, Guillaume Apollinaire, and Lars von Trier.
The installation will be featured at the Contemporary Art Center in Toruń as part of the accompanying events for the Energa Cameraimage festival, which will take place from November 16 to 23, 2024.
Julian Rosefeldt will personally inaugurate the Toruń exhibition alongside Cate Blanchett, who will serve as the jury chair for the Main Competition at this year's Energa Cameraimage festival.
As Cate Blanchett herself explains regarding her standout role, "Women are not a monolith. We are capricious. We do unpalatable things. We are flawed. We fail."
The exhibition is scheduled to be on view from November 17, 2024, to January 17, 2025, following its display in esteemed galleries worldwide.
According to the organizers of the EnergaCAMERIMAGE festival, "Manifesto" invites reflection and stimulates thought about art, politics, and everyday life, while Cate Blanchett's masterful performances and Christoph Krauss's exceptional cinematography highlight the work's performative nature.
