World’s largest cargo plane to bring tons of anti-virus gear to Poland

The world’s largest cargo airplane will bring tons of coronavirus protective gear to Poland next week, state news agency PAP has reported.

The mammoth Antonov An-225 Mriya plane will bring up to 7 million face masks, several hundred thousand medical gowns and several hundred thousand protective helmets purchased by Polish state-owned firms KGHM and Lotos, the PAP news agency reported.

It cited KGHM CEO Marcin Chludziński as saying that his company had allocated USD 15 million to buy medical supplies needed to fight the coronavirus in Poland.

The six-engine 84-metre-long plane is scheduled to land in Warsaw on April 14.

Meanwhile, more than 50 tonnes of personal protective equipment, including 6 million masks and 70,000 suits, arrived in Warsaw on board an Antonov An-124 cargo plane at the end of last month, officials have said.

Michał Dworczyk, head of the Polish Prime Minister's Office, said in late March that Poland would launch an “air bridge” with China to fly in protective equipment for medical staff working to counteract the coronavirus outbreak.
