The Polish government minister is in the running against French Treasury head Odile Renaud-Basso, according to Poland's PAP news agency.

Meanwhile, Italy’s former Economy Minister Pier Carlo Padoan has pulled out of the race to be president of the London-based bank, the Reuters news agency has reported.

The EBRD’s board of governors is set to elect a new president to succeed Britain’s Suma Chakrabarti during its annual meeting on Thursday.

To be elected, a candidate has to receive the votes of a majority of governors, who should represent no less than a majority of the total voting power of members, according to Reuters.

Poland's Kościński was quoted as saying in February that he was honoured to be his country's candidate for the position and that his bid for the London-based bank would “not interfere” with his duties as finance minister.

Kościński, a graduate of Goldsmiths, University of London, took over as Poland’s finance minister in November last year to replace Jerzy Kwieciński.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is an international financial institution that supports projects in more than 30 countries. The bank is owned by 69 countries from five continents, as well as the European Union and the European Investment Bank.

It was set up in 1991 to invest in the former communist countries of Eastern Europe to help them make the transition to a free-market economy.
