French Open: Poland’s Świątek reaches women's singles quarterfinals

Poland's world No. 9 Iga Świątek has moved into the quarterfinals of the women's singles at the French Open Grand Slam tennis tournament in Paris, with a hard-fought 6-3, 6-4 win on Monday against Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine.

The Pole, who is defending her title in Paris, will next face Greece's 18th-seeded Maria Sakkari for a place in the semifinals of the women’s singles competition in the French capital.

Świątek on Sunday booked her place in the quarterfinals of the French Open women's doubles together with Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States.

The rising Polish tennis star, who celebrated her 20th birthday on May 31last month won the women's singles at the Italian Open clay-court tournament in Rome.

In October, she won the 2020 French Open, claiming her maiden Grand Slam title and becoming the first Pole to lift a Grand Slam singles trophy.
