News of Andżelika Borys’ release was unveiled by the spokesman for Poland’s foreign ministry, Łukasz Jasina.

Meanwhile, Poland’s top diplomat Zbigniew Rau tweeted he was “extremely pleased” that Borys had regained her freedom.

The Polish foreign minister also spoke about the issue during a media briefing in the Moldovan capital Chișinău.

Rau revealed that Polish diplomats had sought Borys’ release “for a long time” after she was imprisoned “for no reason at all."

Rau said: "For or all we know, she isn’t in the best of health.”

Poland’s diplomatic mission in Minsk has contacted the activist and will provide her with assistance if necessary, officials also said.

Meanwhile, the Belsat TV network reported that Borys had had her prison sentence replaced with house arrest.

Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Przydacz told PAP that Poland was “working to secure the freedom” of another Polish activist imprisoned by Belarus, Andrzej Poczobut.

A year behind bars

Borys was arrested on March 23, 2021 in the western Belarusian city of Hrodna for organising a cultural event that was deemed “illegal” by the authorities, news outlets reported at the time.

She was later charged with “inciting national and religious hatred” by seeking “to rehabilitate Nazism.” This carries a penalty of five to 12 years in prison in Belarus.

Poczobut, a fellow Polish activist and journalist, was arrested two days later, on March 25, 2021, the PAP news agency reported.
