Other priorities for Poland include protection of civilians in armed conflicts and security beyond its borders, Czaputowicz said.

He told reporters in Warsaw on Monday that Poland would organise several high-profile events during its month-long stint at the helm of the United Nations Security Council.

These include a debate on children in armed conflicts on August 2, a high-level briefing on humanitarian law on August 13, and a debate on security in the Middle East on August 20, Czaputowicz said, as cited by state news agency PAP.

Czaputowicz also said that Poland’s priorities while at the helm of the UN Security Council would include security in neighbouring Ukraine, the PAP news agency reported.

Czaputowicz reaffirmed that Poland would hold a debate on religious freedom at the United Nations on August 22.

Poland this year spearheaded a United Nations initiative to condemn acts of violence based on religion, according to the country’s foreign ministry.

The UN General Assembly at a session in New York in May unanimously adopted a resolution designating August 22 as international day to commemorate victims of violence based on religion.

Poland on January 1, 2018 became a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for a two-year term that ends on December 31, 2019.

Poland held the rotating presidency of the 15-member Council in May last year.

The country will again take over at the helm of the Council on August 1.
