Infection rates have surged in the country in recent days breaking a record daily rise in Covid-19 cases for a third straight day on Saturday, confirming 2,367 new cases.
On Sunday health authorities reported 1,934 new daily cases and 26 deaths.
Overall, the country of 38 million has now reached a total of 100,074 Covid-19 cases since the pandemic hit it in early March, health authorities said. They added that the death toll went up to 2,630, overall. Nearly 26,000 tests have been performed.
As of Saturday, counties with the largest numbers of new infections were designated as 'red' zones, 17 and 'yellow' zones, 34. The most rigorous sanitary restrictions apply in 'red' zones where wearing face masks outside is obligatory. Events, conferences and fairs there have been suspended, while sporting events cannot admit spectators.
The spread of COVID-19 has recently accelerated in Poland, a country which avoided the worst of the first wave. Despite passing the 100,000 barrier, Poland's total number of cases remains well below that in many western European virus hotspots.
The coronavirus epidemic in Poland is developing more slowly than in nearly all neighbouring countries, the Polish state-run news agency PAP reported on Friday citing data provided by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).
The indicator for new infections per 100,000 population over the last fortnight stands at 45 in Poland, 90 in Slovakia, 97 in Ukraine, and 283 in the Czech Republic. Russia has a confirmed infection rate of SARS-CoV-2 at 69 per 100,000 inhabitants while in Lithuania at 46 and Belarus at 43, PAP wrote.
The ECDC is an independent agency of the European Union (EU) whose mission is to strengthen Europe's defences against infectious diseases. Its reports are based on official data provided by the bloc’s sanitary authorities.
