The rules come into force after Poland on Wednesday reported a record 6,526 new coronavirus infections and an all-time high of 116 additional deaths, its worst daily toll since the start of the pandemic.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced the plans to bring in shopping hours reserved for OAPs last week.

At the same time, he pledged additional government funding for nursing homes to the tune of PLN 38 million (EUR 8.5 million, USD 10 million).

Meanwhile, President Andrzej Duda on Wednesday appealed for Poles to protect older people.

After holding talks with the country’s chief sanitary inspector, Duda wrote on Twitter: “The future depends on us. Wash your hands! Wear a mask! Protect seniors citizens!"
