Deputy Health Minister Waldemar Kraska told reporters this week that the third wave of the pandemic was likely to hit its peak in the country “around Easter time.”

He said: “Let's stay at home this Easter and avoid interpersonal contacts. Let's refrain from visiting one another because it’s not the right time for that yet.”

Easter is usually when Poles spend time with their extended families and travel extensively to visit their relatives.

Amid the spread of the coronavirus, the government has advised citizens to practice social distancing, while also reimposing a wide range of restrictions on daily life.

The health ministry appealed to Poles to limit social interactions to immediate household members and reschedule get-togethers "to a safer time."

On Thursday, Poland reported a new record daily rise in coronavirus infections, confirming 35,251 new cases, the most since the pandemic hit the country more than a year ago.
