Meanwhile, leading track-and-field coach Aleksander Matusiński was named coach of the year by a panel of experts.

Włodarczyk in August won the gold in the women's hammer throw at the Tokyo Olympic Games, becoming an Olympic champion for the third successive time.

A special lifetime sporting achievement award went to retired mountain biker Maja Włoszczowska.

Włoszczowska, a former cross-country MTB world champion and a two-time Olympic silver medalist, in October wrapped up her career by finishing runner-up at the Mountain Bike Marathon World Championships on the Italian island of Elba.

The 38-year-old was last summer elected to join the Athletes' Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), becoming the second Pole, after the late Irena Szewińska, to take the prestigious role at the international Olympic body.

The Polish Radio Sports Awards were handed out for the fifth time.

Earlier this month, soccer player Robert Lewandowski was named as Polish athlete of the year for 2021 in an annual poll held by sports newspaper Przegląd Sportowy and private television broadcaster Polsat. Włodarczyk was voted runner-up.
