Polish skaters take gold at European championships

Poland took the first gold medal of the Speed Skating Championships in the Netherlands on Friday after winning the Women's Team Sprint competition.

Andżelika Wójcik, Kaja Ziomek and Karolina Bosiek took the title by a clear margin of 3.91 sec finishing in 1:27.265 for gold, beating second-placed Belarus and Norway in third place.

In the men's team race, Poland came fourth, with the Dutch team triumphing followed by Norway and Italy.

The ISU (International Skating Union) Speed Skating Championships 2022 in Heerenveen started on Friday and will run until Sunday, January 9.

In December, Andżelika Wójcik, 25, won gold and set a national record in the women's 500m competition at the ISU speed skating World Cup in Salt Lake City. Wójcik is the first Poland's skater ever to have finished a 500m run in less than 37 seconds. (mo)
