Tennis: Poland’s Świątek into second round of Wimbledon

Poland’s Iga Świątek has moved into the second round of the Wimbledon tennis championships in London.

The Polish star on Tuesday beat Croatian qualifier Jana Fett 6-0, 6-3 in their first-round women's singles match at the grass-court tournament in the British capital, extending her winning streak to 36 matches.

Świątek, who is ranked world No. 1 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), will next face Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove of the Netherlands.

The Polish player earlier this month won the French Open for the second time after defeating Coco Gauff of the United States in the final.

The Pole last month won the Italian Open clay-court tournament in Rome, defending her crown and claiming her eighth career singles title.

The 21-year-old, coached by countryman Tomasz Wiktorowski, in early April took over as the new number one in women's tennis, becoming the first Pole to top the world rankings.

Świątek in 2018 won the Girls' Singles title at Wimbledon.
