UPDATE: Marchers commemorate Jews deported from Warsaw ghetto 80 years ago

A March of Remembrance was held in the Polish capital on Friday to mark 80 years since the Germans began deporting Jews from the World War II-era Warsaw Ghetto.

On July 22, 1942, the Germans began deporting Jews from the ghetto to the Treblinka death camp. For more than two months, from 5,000 to 7,000 Jews were transported every day by train from Warsaw’s Umschlagplatz to Treblinka, where they were exterminated.

More than 250,000 Jews perished at the time.

This year’s March of Remembrance, the 11th event of its kind, was attended by officials including Israel's ambassador to Poland, Yacov Livne, and Polish presidential aide Wojciech Kolarski.

'From death to life'

Marchers walked along a symbolic route called "From Death to Life," starting at the Umschlagplatz Memorial and finishing on Warsaw's Stare Nalewki Street.

The march concluded with a musical performance by cellist Michał Pepol and veteran singer Sława Przybylska, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
