Officers say they have stopped 1,592 drunk drivers during their annual Operation Torch road safety campaign, which started on Friday and runs until Wednesday evening.

Meanwhile, 303 drivers lost their licences over the long weekend for exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 kph in built-up areas, traffic police spokesman Robert Opas told reporters on Wednesday.

All Saints' Day on November 1 and All Souls' Day on November 2 are when millions of Poles visit the graves of their loved ones, often travelling hundreds of kilometres to their home towns.

At the start of this year, stricter traffic rules and tougher fines for drivers took effect in Poland as part of efforts to improve road safety.

Under these regulations, the maximum fine for traffic offenses went up from PLN 5,000 (EUR 1,065, USD 1,050) to PLN 30,000 (EUR 6,380, USD 6,315).

Drivers breaking the speed limit by more than 30 kph now face a fine of no less than PLN 800.
