The event, dubbed the "Polish Climate Summit,” aims to initiate joint action by the government, NGOs, science and business people to take care of the environment and develop an ambitious and economically rational climate policy for Poland.

During a debate on Thursday, heating expert Piotr Górnik said that, according to the latest estimates, some 50,000 Poles die each year because of coal-generated air pollution.

“The heating sector is on its way to a transition, including efforts to wean itself off coal," Górnik said.

He added: "Until the outbreak of the Ukraine war we thought this would entail gas as a swift and safe alternative. Now, we have to reconsider."
