In a letter to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President Karol Nawrocki wrote that on Ukraine's Independence Day, in his own name and in the name of Poland, he wishes to emphasize the great importance of "a free and sovereign Ukraine - not only as a neighbour and ally, but also as the foundation of peace and stability in our part of Europe".

Karol Nawrocki added that Ukraine's Independence Day is also "an important reminder for Poland and all countries in the region - that independence is not given once and for all. It is a priceless value, but it must be cherished and defended, especially against those who seek to destroy it".

In response, in a thankful post on social media Volodymyr Zelenskyy recalled that Poland has demonstrated "the highest level of solidarity in the most difficult times for Ukraine, in its fight against Russia's full-scale aggression", and that Warsaw and Kyiv "have always been united by our shared aspiration for freedom, independence, and a dignified European future for our peoples".

Ukrainians celebrate Independence Day on August 24th - and this year, for the fourth time already, they have to do it amidst full-scale unlawful Russian aggression, which began in February 2022.
