Since the United States earlier this week announced it would reposition its troops in Poland from a key base near the Ukrainian border, Polish top officials have sought to play down withdrawal fears by insisting that the soldiers would remain in the country.

Opening new US Army barracks in northwestern Poland on Thursday, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said:

“These newly built barracks, capable of accommodating up to 2,500 troops, are our joint, allied investment. We are ironclad allies who have proven their friendship and loyalty. We were together in Iraq and in Afghanistan.”

Earlier this week, media reports suggested that US defense officials are considering a proposal to withdraw as many as 10 thousand troops from Eastern Europe.
