The new strategy comes as part of attempts to wean the bloc off Russian fossil fuels.

It envisages a doubling of the EU's targeted photovoltaic capacity to 320 GW by 2025, and a further boost to almost 600 GW by 2030.

Experts say these targets are ambitious and much needed, but are they realistic?

"The strategy is based on two pillars: massive investment in photovoltaics power as well as innovation and the development of photovoltaics (PV) manufacturing in Europe," Grzegorz Wiśniewski, president of the board at the Warsaw-based Institute of Renewable Energy, told Radio Poland's Danuta Isler.

"This is the first time the European Union noticed the role of photovoltaics in energy transition," he added.
