Poland’s Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau has said he has discussed the situation of Polish families trapped in Gaza in a phone conversation with his Israeli counterpart Eli Cohen.

It is believed that around 30 Poles remain in the area among an estimated 5,000 to 6,000 foreign nationals.

“We are in contact with the Polish embassy here, and they are trying to evacuate us,” Osama Abo Zebida, a Polish citizen living Gaza, told public broadcaster Polish Radio while waiting for an opportunity to be transferred to Egypt.

“When we ask about the timing of the evacuation, we are told that it depends on the Israeli army or government," he added. "We are told to wait. But how long should we continue to wait? Must we wait until an aircraft comes to drop a bomb on us killing me and my wife. Or must we wait until we die of hunger?”

Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Paweł Jabłoński said on Tuesday that Poland was waiting for a formal decision by Israel to allow the evacuation of Polish citizens from Gaza amid the Israeli army’s offensive against Hamas.

Radio Poland's Michał Owczarek has the story.
