Ukraine’s secret services have officially admitted that they were behind the explosions on the Kerch Bridge linking occupied Crimea to Russia. The attack happened in October 2022 but until now there have only been allusions made to the attack in statements by President Zelensky.

Vasyl Malyuk, Head of Ukraine’s Secret Services said that the agency was behind the attack. He referred to the operation as a “special operation”, referring to Putin’s propaganda phrase for the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

"There are many different operations, special operations. We'll be able to speak about some of them publicly, out loud after the victory, we will not talk at all about others," Malyuk said, as reported by Reuters.

In June 2022 there was another explosion on the bridge. Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for the second attack as of today.

The bridge is strategically crucial as the only transport link from Russia to the Crimean peninsula and there was considerable hype surrounding the bridge’s opening in 2018, so attacks on the bridge will echo in Russian awareness. Russia made considerable investments in Crimea attempting to turn it into a propaganda victory for Putin.

As we reported, this week Ukraine's Head of Military Intelligence said that Ukraine would begin the liberation of Crimea "soon".
