Local residents reported casualties, explosions and a road closure in the wake of the attack, according to the Reuters news agency.

The attack, according to Ukrainian intelligence officials, hit Russia's 126th Coastal Defense Brigade stationed in Perevalnoye, a town located more than 200 km away from areas controlled by Ukraine.

GUR spokesman Andriy Yusov told Ukrainian media outlet Liga.Net: "We confirm that there was a hit."

Russia, on the other hand, claimed that all 42 attacking drones were intercepted by air defence systems before reaching their intended destinations in Crimea.

Since Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014, the United States has expressed support for Ukrainian actions targeting Russian military sites in the region.
