The announcement came during an interview with public broadcaster Polish Radio on Friday.
"Later this year, we will proceed with the formation of the sixth division," Błaszczak said.
The new unit is set to be strategically located to the south of the capital Warsaw, Polish Radio's IAR news agency reported.
The defense minister said that Poland currently has four operational army divisions and is working on the formation of a fifth, known as the Podlasie Division.
Earlier this year, the Polish Ministry of Defense greenlit the conceptual framework for the 1st Legions Infantry Division, slated to become Poland's fifth army division, according to officials. Key locations are expected to include Łomża, Grajewo, Kolno and Czerwony Bór in the eastern Podlaskie province.
Błaszczak elaborated on the broader strategy during the interview, stating that "ultimately, the Polish Army will boast a total of six tactical units, each accompanied by its corresponding combat support and security components."
