Ukrainian defense units say that Russian military commanders are employing their infantry units in a manner akin to 'live bait.'

Persistent assaults by Russian troops have been observed on both the northern and southern flanks of Avdiivka. Polish Radio’s news agency IAR quoted a spokesperson for the 110th independent mechanized brigade, actively involved in the area, describing the tactics employed by the Russian forces.

The enemy reportedly deploys small infantry groups, typically consisting of 10–20 soldiers, as part of a ploy to uncover the positions of Ukrainian artillery. These small units, when identified and engaged by Ukrainian artillery, serve as a trigger for the Russians to launch a fleet of drones, aimed at locating Ukrainian artillery positions for subsequent targeting by Russian firepower.

This method, according to the Ukrainian military's assessment, essentially treats Russian soldiers as expendable distractions to gain a strategic advantage. Since the offensive began on October 10, the Russian campaign has resulted in substantial losses, including over a hundred armored vehicles and several thousand troops.
