This marks Baerbock’s ninth visit to Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, with media noting that she traveled to Kyiv overnight by train from Poland.
According to a statement from Germany’s Foreign Ministry, Baerbock aims to engage in political talks and meet with Ukrainians who have “heroically defended their country’s future and security for nearly 1,000 days.”
“We will counter this cruelty with humanity and support, so that Ukrainians not only survive the winter, but so that their country endures. They are, after all, defending the freedom of all of us in Europe,” Baerbock stated.
The German Foreign Ministry explained in a statement that a critical part of the “winter shield” initiative for Ukraine involves bolstering its air defense capabilities against Russian attacks, and that Germany will continue to support Ukraine's path toward the European Union.
