European Parliament President Roberta Metsola will make a statement at the beginning of the extraordinary session, after which Zelensky will address MEPs via live video link from Ukraine.

Political group leaders will then follow, according to an announcement.

Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24 2022, the EU has strongly supported the country by condemning Russia’s aggression, imposing sanctions and stepping up its political, humanitarian, military and financial aid to Kyiv, according to the European Parliament.

The EU parliament has also been a fervent supporter of Ukraine’s efforts to join the EU and has repeatedly called on EU member states to launch accession talks, the EU legislature said on its website.

In addition, MEPs have firmly stated that Russia must compensate financially for the destruction it has caused in Ukraine, arguing that the EU should make use of Moscow’s confiscated state-owned assets to facilitate this, the europarl.europa.eu website said.

Last month, European lawmakers backed plans to offer Ukraine a loan of up to EUR 35 billion to be repaid with future revenues from frozen Russian assets.

In October last year, European lawmakers approved a EUR 50 billion facility, in the form of grants and loans, to support Ukraine's recovery and reconstruction amid Russia's invasion.

Russia invaded Ukraine by land, air and sea on February 24, 2022, starting the largest military conflict in Europe since World War II.

Monday is day 999 of Russia's war on Ukraine.
